Where Is the Best Place to Put a Reed Diffuser?
Where you put a reed diffuser can make a surprisingly big difference to how well you can smell it, how evenly the fragrance travels around the room and even how quickly you use the oil.
In this guide, I'll show you where I would personally place a reed diffuser for the best performance, the areas I would avoid, and which ROOMOI fragrances I would choose for different rooms around the home.
Why Reed Diffuser Placement Matters
One thing I often find with reed diffusers is that people immediately assume the fragrance itself is too weak when they cannot smell it.
Sometimes that is true, but quite often the diffuser is simply sitting in the wrong place.
Reed diffusers work by drawing fragrance oil up through the reeds and releasing it gradually into the surrounding air. Once the fragrance leaves the reeds, it still needs air movement to travel around the room.
If you hide the bottle in the back of a bookcase, behind a curtain or in a corner nobody walks past, much of the fragrance can remain concentrated around the diffuser itself.
If fragrance strength is your main issue, I have also put together a separate guide on how to make a reed diffuser smell stronger.
The Best Position for a Reed Diffuser
There is no single perfect position that works in every home, but these are the placement rules I personally use when setting up a diffuser.
Choose a high traffic area
Hallways, entrances and places you naturally walk past are ideal because gentle movement helps carry the fragrance through the surrounding space.
Aim for waist to chest height
Console tables, sideboards and chests of drawers are usually better than placing a diffuser right down at floor level or very high above your head.
Give the reeds space
Avoid squeezing your diffuser underneath shelving or behind objects. The reeds need open space around them for the fragrance to disperse.
Avoid direct sunlight
A sunny windowsill might look attractive, but heat can speed up evaporation and make you use the fragrance oil much more quickly.
Keep away from heat
Radiators, fireplaces and warm appliances are not good diffuser locations. A cool, stable environment is much better.
Protect the surface
Fragrance oil can mark some painted, polished or porous surfaces, so I always recommend placing the bottle on a coaster or protective tray.
Good places to try
- Hallway console tables
- Living room sideboards
- Chest of drawers
- Bathroom vanity units
- Open shelves at a sensible height
- Near the natural route into a room
Places I would avoid
- Directly beside a radiator
- Sunny windowsills
- Behind curtains
- Directly underneath air vents
- Very high shelves
- Unstable or unprotected surfaces
Where Should You Put a Reed Diffuser in Each Room?
Placement is only half of the decision. I also like to think about the fragrance itself and whether its character suits the room.
Below are the positions I would try first in each area of the home, along with the ROOMOI diffuser I would personally pair with that space.

My Pick: ROOMOI Alambra
Your hallway is one of my favourite places for a diffuser because everyone entering the house walks past it. That movement helps the fragrance travel, but it also means scent becomes part of the first impression of your home.
I would choose Alambra here. It has a smooth, refined character that reminds me of the type of fragrance you might notice when walking into a luxury hotel or spa.

My Pick: ROOMOI Vin Noble
Living rooms are often larger than bathrooms or bedrooms, so they can handle something with a little more presence.
Vin Noble is the ROOMOI diffuser I tend to recommend when somebody wants a fragrance to really make an impression. The dark fruit and aged wood profile has enough depth to suit a larger social space without needing to hide the diffuser right in the centre of the room.

My Pick: ROOMOI Oasi
In a bedroom I usually prefer fragrance to sit comfortably in the background rather than dominate the room.
Oasi works particularly well for this. Black tea, tobacco leaves and earthy vetiver give it a deeper, calmer feel that suits spaces designed for winding down.

My Pick: ROOMOI Gingerly
Bathrooms are normally smaller spaces, so you often do not need the same fragrance strength you would use in an open plan living area.
Gingerly is one of the fresher ROOMOI options, with bright lime and ginger creating a clean, lively scent that I think suits a bathroom particularly well.

My Pick: ROOMOI Celestial Gardenia
Kitchens can already contain a lot of competing smells, so I tend to avoid anything too dark or heavy here.
Celestial Gardenia feels much brighter. Sicilian citrus and Mediterranean fruits give it a clean, uplifting quality that suits a kitchen without feeling too rich beside food.

My Pick: ROOMOI Regal Glory
When I am working, I personally prefer something fresh and noticeable without the scent becoming too distracting.
Regal Glory has a crisp fruity opening with a woody base, which makes it one of the ROOMOI scents I think works particularly well in a workspace.
My ROOMOI scent map for the home
If I was fragrancing a whole home rather than choosing one diffuser, this is roughly how I would divide the collection.

Where Should You Not Put a Reed Diffuser?
A diffuser does not need perfect conditions, but there are a few locations I would actively avoid.
- Sunny windowsills: sunlight and warmth can speed up evaporation.
- Next to radiators: extra heat can make the liquid disappear much faster.
- Above fireplaces: heat is the opposite of what you want around diffuser oil.
- Behind curtains: this can trap fragrance around the bottle rather than allowing it to circulate.
- Directly under heating or cooling vents: strong airflow can increase evaporation and create uneven scent distribution.
- Hidden in deep shelving: your reeds need open space around them.
- Unstable surfaces: always think about the risk of spills, especially around children and pets.

Does the Size of the Room Matter?
Definitely. I would not set up a diffuser in a compact downstairs bathroom in exactly the same way as I would in a large open plan living space.
One of the easiest ways to control fragrance strength is simply changing how many reeds you use.
Small Rooms
For bathrooms, cloakrooms and compact bedrooms, I would start with around 4 to 5 reeds and add more only if needed.
Medium Rooms
Bedrooms, offices and standard living rooms can normally use more reeds, but I would still adjust gradually based on how strong the fragrance feels.
Large Open Spaces
In open plan rooms, larger hallways and entertaining spaces, using the full reed set gives the diffuser the best opportunity to distribute fragrance.
Should You Use the Same Reed Diffuser in Every Room?
You can, but personally I prefer using different scent styles to create a different atmosphere as you move through the house.
A rich fruity fragrance that feels brilliant in a living room might feel too heavy in a small bathroom. Equally, a subtle fresh fragrance can disappear in a large open plan space.
I would think less about matching every bottle and more about matching the fragrance to what you want that particular room to feel like.
That is why I might use something rich like Vin Noble in the main living area, something relaxing like Oasi in the bedroom and something brighter such as Gingerly or Celestial Gardenia in the kitchen or bathroom.
Not Sure Which Diffuser Suits Your Room?
Fragrance is personal, and the scent I would choose for a room will not necessarily be the one you fall in love with.

Reed Diffuser Placement FAQs
Where is the best place to put a reed diffuser?
I would normally choose an open surface around waist to chest height in a part of the room people regularly walk past. Hallway console tables, living room sideboards and chests of drawers are all good starting points.
Should a reed diffuser be placed high or low?
Somewhere in the middle usually works best. Rather than placing it on the floor or at the top of a very high shelf, I prefer a console, cabinet or sideboard around waist to chest height where the fragrance has room to disperse.
Should I put a reed diffuser near a door?
Near the route through a doorway can work very well because people walking past create gentle air movement. I would avoid putting it directly in a very strong draught from an exterior door that remains open for long periods.
Can I put a reed diffuser on a windowsill?
I would avoid a windowsill that receives direct sunlight. Heat and sunlight can increase evaporation, meaning you use the fragrance oil more quickly.
Can I put a reed diffuser near a radiator?
No. I recommend keeping reed diffusers away from radiators, fireplaces and other significant sources of heat. A cooler position is much better for controlled evaporation.
Where should I put a reed diffuser in the bedroom?
A dressing table or chest of drawers works well. I would normally position it away from your pillow and somewhere with open space around the reeds.
Where should I put a reed diffuser in the bathroom?
A dry vanity unit, cabinet or shelf is usually a good option. Keep it away from direct water, strong extraction airflow and anywhere it could easily be knocked over.
Why can I only smell my diffuser when I stand next to it?
Placement may be part of the problem. Try moving it from a stagnant corner to somewhere with gentle natural airflow, such as near a walkway or doorway. You may also have become accustomed to the fragrance over time, which is sometimes called nose blindness.
How often should I flip reed diffuser sticks?
I would normally flip the reeds roughly every two weeks to refresh the fragrance. Flipping them much more frequently can increase fragrance strength temporarily, but it will also make the liquid evaporate faster.
How many reeds should I use in a small room?
For a small bathroom or compact room, around 4 to 5 reeds is a sensible starting point. Add more gradually if you want a stronger scent.
My Advice Before You Move Your Diffuser
If your reed diffuser is not performing how you expected, I would not immediately assume you need a stronger fragrance.
Start with the position.
Move it into an open area people naturally walk past, keep it around waist to chest height, give the reeds plenty of space and keep the bottle away from direct sunlight and heat.
Once the placement is right, you can then adjust the number of reeds to suit the size of the room.
It is a small change, but in my experience it can make a huge difference to how fragrance moves through your home.
